Usain St. Leo Bolt, OJ, C.D., is a Jamaican sprinter and a three-time World and Olympicgold medalist. He is the world record and Olympic record holder in the 100 metres, the 200 metres and (along with his teammates) the4 x 100 metres relay. He is the reigning World and Olympic champion in these three events.

Bolt distinguished himself with a 200 m gold medal at the 2002 World Junior Championships, making him the competition’s youngest-ever gold medalist. In 2004, at the CARIFTA Games, he became the first junior sprinter to run the 200 m in under 20 seconds with a time of 19.93 s, breaking the previous world junior record held by Roy Martin by two-tenths of a second. He turned professional in 2004, and although he competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics, he missed most of the next two seasons due to injuries. In 2007, he surpassed Don Quarrie’s 200 m Jamaican record with a run of 19.75 s.

His 2008 season began with his first world record performance—a 100 m world record of 9.72 s—and culminated in world and Olympic records in both the 100 m and 200 m events at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. He ran 9.69 s for the 100 m and 19.30 s in the 200 m, and also set a 4×100 m relay record of 37.10 s with the Jamaican team. This made him the first man to win three sprinting events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984, and the first man to set world records in all three at a single Olympics. The following year he further lowered his own 100 m and 200 m world records to 9.58 s and 19.19 s respectively at the 2009 World Championships. This made him the first man to hold both the 100 and 200 m world and Olympic titles at the same time.

The Shanghai Maglev Train or Shanghai Transrapid (literally “Shanghai Magnetic Levitation Demonstration Operation Line”) is a magnetic levitation train, or maglev line that operates in Shanghai, China. It is notable for being the first commercial high-speed magnetic levitation line in the world.

During a non-commercial test run on 12 November 2003, a maglev train achieved a Chinese record speed of 5,001 km/h (3,107 mph). The train line was designed to connect Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the outskirts of central Pudong where passengers could interchange to the Shanghai Metro to continue their trip to the city center.

Construction of the line began in 1 March 2001 and public commercial service commenced on 1 January 2004. The top operational commercial speed of this train is 431 km/h (268 mph), making it the world’s fastest train in regular commercial services since its opening in 2004, faster than previous record holder at 367 km/h (228 mph) with TGV in France and also faster than the latest CRH conventional wheel train in China at 350 km/h (217 mph). The top speed of 431 km/h (268 mph) is also faster than the top speed of any production automobile (except for the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, which has roughly the same top speed), Formula One car, or MotoGP super bikes.

The train set and tracks were built by Siemens. Two commercial maglev systems had predated the Shanghai system—the Birmingham Maglev in the United Kingdom and the Berlin M-Bahn—both were low-speed operations and had closed before the opening of the Shanghai Maglev Train.

The Tomahawk was a Dodge concept vehicle introduced at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. It had futuristic and unusual design, featuring the 500 hp (370 kW) 8.3 L (506.5 cu in) V10 SRT10 engine from the Dodge Viper. The vehicle has two front wheels and two rear wheels, making it a kind of motorized quadricycle rather than a typical motorcycle.

This super heavy weight is crafted to intimidate and destroy all competition. That does not mean that you can carry this on to the road as you would never be able to obtain a license for it. So they are nothing but rolling sculptures and that is a heavy price to pay for something that you can’t take out and flaunt.  With a top speed of well over 675 mph, this thing will blur everything around!

Speed: Mach 2.8 to 3.0

BrahMos is a stealth supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land. It is a joint venture between Republic of India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia who have together formed BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited. It is the world’s fastest cruise missile in operation.

The name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia. The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0. It is about three-and-a-half times faster than the USA’s subsonic Harpoon cruise missile. An Air launched variant is also planned which is expected to come out in 2012 and will make India the only country with supersonic missiles in all the defence forces. A hypersonic version of the missile is also presently under development with speed of Mach 7 to boost aerial fast strike capability. It is expected to be ready by 2016.

BrahMos II is a stealth hypersonic cruise missile that is being currently under development that can fly at Mach 7.BrahMos II land variant design has been completed and 4 Land to Land test variants are ready to be tested.

Rest of the variants will be tested in the successive years of 2012-13, design is projected to be completed by October 2011  and will arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy. In Russian navy project 21956 Destroyers are most likely to be equipped with BrahMos II.


Accident Protection Device for Small Cars

 Driver-assistance systems can help prevent accidents. Quite simply, the more a car knows about its surroundings, the more intelligently it can respond to them. Researchers have now developed an optical sensor for the windshield that can even tell the difference between fog and darkness.

The number of traffic fatalities on Germany’s roads has steadily fallen in recent years. As studies show, this also owes to the numerous new driver-assistance systems that react more quickly than a human being can. They identify risks, warn of hazards and assist the driver in critical situations. Radar sensors, for instance, scan surrounding traffic conditions, monitoring the vehicle’s blind spot or maintaining a safe distance to the vehicle in front; infrared detectors improve night vision, and fatigue sensors sound an alarm if there is a risk of momentary driver drowsiness. The system will also be available for small cars.

To monitor the surroundings during a journey, complex systems equipped not only with a camera but also with sensors are now in use. These systems can register difficult-visibility areas near the vehicle — such as when parking — and automatically analyze the camera pictures generated. These sensors are mounted between the windshield and the rear-view mirror. In addition to imaging data, they also deliver information about ambient light conditions; for instance, they can distinguish between darkness and fog. The sensors interpret the optical data and analyze weather conditions. Still, thus far such high-tech systems have found their way only onto high-priced vehicles. They have been too expensive for standard-size and small models. The reason: with conventional components, constant use results in imprecise measurements — the integrated LEDs become less powerful over time, and the needed light detectors lose some of their sensitivity. To date, only expensive components have proven able to offset these effects.

This is all about to change: in the EU-sponsored “ADOSE” project, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin, working with Centro Ricerche Fiat and the chip manufacturer STMicroelectronics, have developed a sensor system that can be inexpensively produced for medium-sized and small cars as well. “Our multifunctional system consists of an entire camera, two sensors equipped with Fresnel lenses to detect light signals, and an infrared LED. Because fog and darkness can exhibit optically identical spectra, it is difficult to distinguish between these two light phenomena. That’s why the infrared LED emits light waves that are scattered back in fog but not in conditions of darkness,” explains IZM group manager Dr. Ing. Henning Schroeder.

“It’s particularly difficult to capture the light signal from a broad aperture angle, to bundle the signal and pass it along the circuit board to the four corners of the camera chip. Because the middle of the chip is reserved for recording the camera image,” Schroeder notes. To make this possible, the researcher and his team have developed lightpipes in a hot stamping procedure. These are hollow, mirrored tubes that can deflect a light signal by as much as 90 degrees. Up until now, optical fibers have been used to transmit these signals. But these snap at even low bending radii, are expensive and must be painstakingly mounted in place manually. “With the lightpipes, we have succeeded in making the optical signal transmission more efficient, making the entire system smaller and reducing costs as a result,” the researcher points out. The hot stamping method involves several optical channels being produced in a single pass, simplifying assembly considerably. The trick: the IZM scientists’ system is scalable and can be expanded through the addition of additional lightpipes — to record solar radiation, for instance.

The experts at IZM developed not only the lightpipes but also the Fresnel lenses for these sensors. They are also responsible for the design of the sensor module, which was carried out via Rapid Prototyping. A prototype of the sensor module is already in hand. Centro Ricerche Fiat is currently putting it through the paces in an initial field test.


Review: Lamborghini’s Aventador LP700-4

Lamborghini is really good at creating sinister super sports cars, but it is equally as talented at naming them. According to the company, “Aventador” was the name of a bull that entered into battle on October 1993 at the Saragossa Arena, earning the “Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera” for its outstanding courage. Having the courage to go up against a new world of super Sports Cars  will be the name of the game for the new Lamborghini flagship. Today’s world is extremely high-tech and many new players have entered the arena. Lamborghini has been promoting its carbon-fiber monocoque technology and the Aventador’s 2.9 second 0-62mph, but will that be enough?Let’s see the review..

A new and innovative steering wheel system will also make it into the Aventador. The system has the ability to think its way through a bend adhering to the perfect line. This could be similar to the McLaren MP 4-12C brake steer system that will debut this month. It, in conjunction with a dozen computer systems, analyzes how the driver has entered a curve and adjusts steering inputs and braking to help the car maintain a more efficient line.

Next to the impressive 700 HP V12 engine, the new supercar will also feature an innovative and highly sophisticated suspension concept. The first details of the concept reveal that the pushrod spring and damper was inspired by Formula 1 and adapted to a high-performance road-going vehicle, allowing it to handle better and be much more responsive. Next to this, the Aventador will also get an aluminum double wishbone suspension and a carbon ceramic brake system. The spring elements are not located on the wheel mounts, but connected inboard to the bodyshell structure. They are transversely positioned: under the windscreen in the front and close to the engine in the rear. Also at the front axle are shock absorbers that come equipped with a hydraulic lifting system enabling the front end of the super sports car to be lifted by 40 millimeters at the touch of a button. When driving a Lamborghini through any parking lot with speed-bumps you will immediately recognize the convenience and need for a system that lifts the front end.

The car is powered by a 12 cylinder 6.5 litre engine. It can touch an acceleration of 100 km per hour in just 2.9 seconds and can attain a top speed of 350 km per hour.

Although the company did not share the possible price of this super premium car, industry experts put a figure of around Rs 1.6 crore on it.

The Tata Pixel, with ‘Zero Turn’ drive and an innovative diamond-shaped door system, is a new city car concept for Europe from Tata Motors. The Tata Pixel’s ability to manoeuvre and park in the tightest of spaces is made possible by its Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT).

This highly efficient, cost-effective system assists rotation of the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards during low-speed manoeuvres, while the front wheels turn at acute angles. High Performance Li-ion battery for Car

Scientists are reporting development of an advanced lithium-ion battery that is ideal for powering the electric vehicles now making their way into dealer showrooms. The new battery can store large amounts of energy in a small space and has a high rate capacity, meaning it can provide current even in extreme temperatures.

A report on this innovation appears in ACS’ Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Bruno Scrosati, Yang-Kook Sun, and colleagues point out that consumers have a great desire for electric vehicles, given the shortage and expense of petroleum. But a typical hybrid car can only go short distances on electricity alone, and they hold less charge in very hot or very cold temperatures. With the government push to have one million electric cars on U.S. roads by 2015, the pressure to solve these problems is high. To make electric vehicles a more realistic alternative to gas-powered automobiles, the researchers realized that an improved battery was needed.

The scientists developed a high-capacity, nanostructured, tin-carbon anode, or positive electrode, and a high-voltage, lithium-ion cathode, the negative electrode. When the two parts are put together, the result is a high-performance battery with a high energy density and rate capacity. “On the basis of the performance demonstrated here, this battery is a top candidate for powering sustainable vehicles,” the researchers say.

The authors acknowledge funding from WCU (World Class University) program through the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation.

Jaguar C-X75 (e-Car) looks stunning:Review

Tata motors owned Jaguar has unveiled a electric concept car that can run 900 kms to a charge with a top speed of 320 kms per hour.

Christened C-X75 , it has been created to celebrate 75 years of the company, says Ian Callum, design director of Jaguar Cars.

Callum said that he was very “excited about the car and loved its design.

He said the concept car had everything a Jaguar should be.

The car which would be put on display at the prestigious Los Angles Auto Show beginning tomorrow has created waves in the last few days after being exhibited in some parts of this city of Hollywood.

“It possesses remarkable poise and grace yet at the same time has the excitement and potency of a true supercar”, Callum said.

“This is as close to a pure art form as a concept car and get and is a worthy homage to 75 years of iconic Jaguar design, – he said.

Top Jaguar executives insist C-X75 was only a concept car and not for commercial sale while conceding they have been receiving a lot of inquiries from serious potential buyers.

Built with lightweight aluminum panels and chassis, the C-X75 is a 4WD vehicle.

Besides being powered by 145kw electric motors at all wheels, it has a pair of micro gas-turbines that provide another 140Kw of charge and extend the range to 900 km.

Top speed is over 320 km/h and the two-seater can sprint from 0-100 km/h in just over 3.0 seconds.

The super car was first put to public display at the Paris Auto show recently and now at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

From here it would travel to China, before it goes back to its garage at London.

Callum said there is no plan to take this concept car to India, where its owners the Tata Motors is headquartered.

On comparison and similarity between Tata NANO – the world’s cheapest car – and Jaguar C-X75, now being dubbed as the ‘super car’ – he said it was ‘innovation’ which has been the key thrust of its chief Ratan Tata.

“Mr Ratan Tata, saw it in August some time. He saw it a few times of course as we developed it. He is very excited about it.

“He (Tata) loves the technology. He loves the design of it. And he is a great fan of the car,” Callum said.

“When he (Tata) saw it all finished, he was very very delighted indeed,” Callum said, adding that at the moment there is no plan to market this super car.

Meanwhile, the advanced design director of Jaguar Jullian Thomson has said the car “represents the ultimate in design technology,”


“It is very obvious that Mr Tata himself loves the Jaguar brand and has a very very passionate view of Jaguar,” said Thomson.

“We showed him (this car) three-four weeks before the Paris show”, he said adding “as a surprise, we just pushed it into the viewing area and he absolutely loved the car straight away”.

In Los Angeles, before it landed up at the auto show, the car was put up for restricted viewing at the legendary garage of Tonight Show host and longtime car collector Jay Leno.

In fact, Leno became the first person outside Jaguar to drive the C-X75 on a public highway.

If the car is produced, it will be powered by twin turbines charging four electric motors.

“I am speechless,” Leno said after having a look at the car.

Skoda Yeti: a small review

Skoda Auto India has launched compact SUV Skoda Yeti in India, this launch is followed by New Skoda Fabia a few months ago. The new Skoda vehicle comes in two variants i.e. Ambiente and Elegance.The Skoda Yeti is not a pure SUV, but is a crossover vehicle. In other words it is a model that exists between a car and an SUV. The Yeti was displayed at the Delhi Auto Expo in January, 2010.
